The Shepadoodle is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the German Shepherd and the Poodle (Standard, Miniture or Toy). The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Origin

Shepadoodles are designer dogs and display traits of both their parents. This fantastic breed was developed in the US Army as military police dogs in the 1960’s. Because of their working breed parents, these dogs have an energetic disposition and rigorous exercise requirements. German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breeds in America and is known for its highly energetic behavior. Physical Appearance

German Shepherd Poodle Mix tends to weigh about 50 to 80 pounds. They are tall animals and reach up to 22 to 28 inches depending on their overall build and nutrition. Coat colors include black, sable, cream, tan and gray.

Since they are designer breeds, Shepadoodles can closely resemble either parent. The dog’s coat can either turn out to be straight or wavy and can be dense or thick. However, even if the dog ends up with a coat similar to the German Shepherd in terms of color, rest assured they are not likely to become heavy shedders because of the Poodle genes.

Grooming Requirements

Shepadoodles typically have low grooming requirements and do not shed as much as GSP. However, the breed may be hypo-allergic make sure to take your furry friend to the vet before you stock up on dog shampoos and grooming essentials.

Like other dogs, German Shepherd Poodle mix requires daily brushing sessions to prevent their fur from being tangled and require periodic baths. It is recommended you have your dog’s hair trimmed into a buzz cut during the summers so his skin can breathe. Shepadoodles are also known to suffer from dry skin during the winters hence be sure to lather skin with cod liver oil when the temperature starts to drop.

Apart from caring for their fur coat, inspect your dog’s ears after every few weeks to eliminate the chances of an ear infection. Dip a clean cotton ball with ear cleaning solution and use it to wipe your dog’s ear. Be sure to only clean the outer area, as you do not want to damage your dog’s ear. Additionally get your dog’s toenails clipped regularly by a groomer or simply do it by yourself and brush their teeth at least a few times a week to reduce the risks of periodontal diseases. Also, take your pet to frequent trips to the vet to ensure he is not suffering from a health condition.

Exercise Requirements

Since both parents are active working dogs, Shepadoodles tend to be very energetic and like spending plenty of time outdoors. Whether its walking, playing fetch or chasing children around the yard, it is best you employ an agility routine for your pet so that they do not get bored. Shepadoodles are intelligent breeds and are likely to get cranky and irritable if they are not entertained for long periods. Staying inactive for long periods can also cause your pet to become obese. If have a job and work long hours, ensure your pet has plenty of dog toys to keep himself or herself engaged. Also, make sure to take out time from your busy schedule to walk your dog every day. Following such a routine will ensure your Shepadoodle remains happy and healthy.

Common Health Problems

Similar to other dogs, Shepadoodles are susceptible to a number of health conditions. Some health problems that are you should be wary of include Von Willebrand’s disorder and Hip Dysplasia. Additionally, Shepadoodles are likely to suffer from ticks and flea bites if you do not take care of their hair. Ensure you invest in good quality shampoo and have your dog’s hair trimmed every once in a while.
